Learn Hindi part 3|Types of Hindi words

The part of grammar in which the type, translation and etymology of words are considered, is called word thought.

Definition of word - Meaningful sound of one or more letters is called 'word . example :

जल , वायु , पुस्तक , अक्षर jal, vayu, pustak, akshar water, air, book, letter

There are two types of words - 1. Meaningful words, 2. meaningless words.

Meaningful words - Words which convey a meaning are called meaningful words. Example - plate. The word denotes a vessel made of any metal of brass or steel, hence 'Thali' is a 'meaningful' word. Examples of meaningful words are 'वायु ' , ('air'),

'पुस्तक' ('book') and

 'पानी ' ('water').

Nonsensical words - are called tired subways, which do not convey any specific meaning. Example - 'wanna', vay . Nonsense words are just imitations of sound. Only meaningful words are important in grammar.

Syllables - There are many words or sounds in the language which have no meaning of their own but become meaningful when they are mixed with other words. Such independent sounds are called syllables, these syllables are called 'prefix' and 'suffix'

Example - Originally they do not have any independent meaning, but 'Para' in front of 'जय'( 'Jai') and 'पन'('Pan ) in front of 'बच' ('Bach') have become meaningful sounds like 'पराजय',(parajai-'Defeat',),'बचपन' ' (bachpan- 'Childhood')

Rude Words - Words which are not formed by the combination of any other word and do not give any meaning on breaking them but have become famous for a particular thing are called orthodox words. Example -

Hindi IPA sound eng. mean

काला kɑ:lɑ: black धर्म dhʌrm Religion देश desh country जल jʌl water हाथ hɑ:th hand घोड़ा ghɒdɑ: horse

2 . Compound words - The words which are formed by the combination of other words like compound, prefix, suffix etc. are called compound words. Example -

मानवता mɑ:nʌvtɑ: humanity पाठशाला pɑ:thshɑ:lɑ: school पुस्तकालय pʊstkɑ:lʌyɑ: library

3. Orthodox Words - which are compound, but do not reveal the general meaning, but are fixed for a particular thing like conventional words, they are called orthodox words.

example -

संसद sʌnsʌd - parliament

In the word Pankaj, 'पंक' (Punk) means 'mud' and 'ज' (J) means to take birth. That is, पंक+ज = पंकज ( Panka + J = Pankaj ) The word is fixed only for lotus. That somehow the अंगरखा 'tunic' ring protects all the clothes, but for the robe the word 'ang' means body 'kept' has been used here to protect. And अंग+ रखा = अंगरखा ( ang + rakha = angrakha).

Just as things, ideas and feelings are exchanged among individuals, in societies and among castes, similarly established languages also exchange words among themselves.
