We express our feelings or thoughts to others through language and understand the feelings or thoughts of others.

Language can be expressed in three forms, written, oral and symbolic.

(1) Written form - When thoughts and feelings are expressed in writing, then it is called written form of language. Example -: Book writing, essay writing, letter writing and expressing ideas through magazine writing are examples of written language.

(2) Oral form - When one's thoughts are expressed by speaking and listening with ears, the listener understands it, then it is called language of oral form Example-: Expression of thoughts through conversation, speech is called oral form of language.

(3) Symbolic form - When we express our expressive thoughts through signs, it is called cultural form of language. Example -: nodding head, distributing betel nut or cardamom for invitation, gesture of hand to invite or not to flag, talk in the eyes, etc.

There are mainly two forms of language, oral language and written language. The language which we study in grammar is written language.

Hindi language is written in Devanagari script, with the help of grammar we learn to write, read and speak the language correctly. Therefore the knowledge of pure language is called grammar and the purpose of grammar is to acquire good knowledge of the language.
